Add fallback option for mail merge fields
When inserting mail merges, for example the common case is Hello <<First Name>>, Its helpful to have a fall back option for any values that are blank (most email solutions let you do this). It would look something like this:
<<First Name, Fallback:My Good Friend>>

I worked around this issue by creating a new column in my Sheet that performs this logic. I have a column called "NameToUse" which checks whether the "Nickname" column is empty, and if it is not empty then it uses that column. Otherwise, it uses the "First Name" column.
The formula looks like this:
In this case, column E2 is the "Nickname" column, and C2 is the "First Name" column. This forumla goes into another column (in my case, F2). Set it correctly for one contact's cell, and then auto-fill the rest of the column and it should correctly reference future rows (E3 - C3 - F3, etc.).
+3! I was just posting the same. I would suggest a slightly different syntax like this: <<First Name::My Good Friend>>. But either works.
